Saint Nazaire

 Tour Summary
This tour can either commence in Normandy (where I live) or I can meet you in Brittany, if for example you wish to travel directly from Paris. It is different to my other tours in that I would need to stay in Saint Nazaire with you and would join you for meals etc. The itinerary can be customised. Please contact me for prices.
Itinerary (day one)
If starting in Normandy we first must contend with a 4 drive down to Brittany. This can be broken up with stops of interest. A few miles away from Saint Nazaire we will make a stop at the Grand Blockhaus in Batz sur Mer.

This is an amazing bunker complex with great views of the coast. It covers the German defenses of the Loire estuary, the battle of the Saint Nazire pocket, the Commando raid of 1942 and the eventual liberation. We will also have lunch somewhere overlooking the beautiful coast.

After the museum visit we will head into Saint Nazaire and a hotel right beside the U-Boat pens. After checking in we can have a look around the U-Boat pens and in the evening have a meal somewhere nearby.
Itinerary (day two)
We start the day walking around the old town, the old Mole and following the action of Operation Chariot. This daring raid has gone down in history as one of the most incredible and brave endeavours of the war. Though the town was heavily bombed there is still enough to see especially from the Old Mole itself heavily pock marked with bullet/shell impacts.

There are a number of memorials on the sea front and if there is time we can visit the French Espadon 1960s submarine. We will also walk around the roof of The fortified lock on the other side of the water for great views of the U-Boat Pens.
After lunch we say goodbye to Saint Nazaire and head to the Commonwealth War Graves Cemetery in Escoublac-la-Baule. This is the final resting place of men from Operation Chariot and also events from 1940 including causalities from RMS Lancastria, sunk with over 3000 men on board.
